CP Snow’s discussion of two cultures reflects my thoughts and struggles on my experience at UCLA. I am a Bioengineering major and often spend my days in a stroke research lab or doing work for a biopharmaceutical company. Week 7: Neurosci + Art

The topic of neuroscience greatly interests me, reflected in my involvement in Alzheimer’s advocacy and a stroke research lab. In fact, the building where I conduct this research, Neuroscience Research Building at UCLA, illustrates the great interest in understanding the intricacies of the brain.  Neuroscience Research Building at UCLA (UCLA Brain Mapping Center <http://www.bmap.ucla.edu>) From this week’s lecture, it was amazing to see the merging of neuroscience and art with Brainbow. WEEK 4 ART + MEDTECH My major in bioengineering completely immerses me in designing innovative medical technologies to health problems. Art, to me, has been completely separate from this process or anything involving medicine and health. However, this week’s lecture and readings have given me a deeper understanding how medical innovations impact art and how art plays a pivotal role in developing new medical technologies. Even centuries ago in ancient times, medicine was revealed through art. As Dr. Vesna points out in lecture, the process of dissection and mummification in ancient Egypt led to new understandings of the human body. Though based in an artistic ritual ceremony, Egyptian mummification led to developments in medicine.
